One Dead After Shooting Reported in Wrightsville Beach; Shelter-in-Place Ordered
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. — September 5, 2026 — Law enforcement agencies responded to Wrightsville Beach Saturday afternoon following a reported shooting that left one person dead and prompted officials to order people in parts of the area to shelter in place.
Authorities were called to the area shortly after 12 p.m. following reports of a weapon-related incident. Emergency crews and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
Heavy Police Presence on North Lumina
A large emergency response was reported along North Lumina Avenue, with at least a dozen emergency vehicles observed in the area, including sheriff’s deputies, police officers, ambulances and fire-rescue personnel.
The roadway was blocked by police as authorities secured the area. A mobile command unit was also being staged, while numerous additional police vehicles were reported near Access 5.
Authorities were restricting access to the northern portion of North Lumina Avenue as the investigation continued.
Shelter-in-Place Order Issued
Law enforcement asked people in the Surf Club and Wrightsville Beach areas to shelter in place while officers worked to secure the scene.
Residents, visitors and others in the affected area were urged to remain indoors and follow instructions from law enforcement until officials determine that it is safe to resume normal activities.
One Person Dead
Officials confirmed that one person died in connection with the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including what led to the violence and whether a suspect has been identified or taken into custody, have not yet been released.
Authorities have not provided additional information about the victim.
Investigation Underway
A significant law enforcement presence remained in the area Saturday afternoon as officers investigated the incident and worked to determine whether there was any continuing threat to the public.
People were being asked to avoid North Lumina Avenue and the surrounding area so emergency personnel could carry out their work.
